Evidence of achievement of the APSTs – Graduate Level

APST 1 – Know students and how they learn

Knowing how students learn and what drives them to engage and participate in the classroom is primarily made possible through meaningful relationships. As a teacher, I strive to listen, observe and understand, before jumping to conclusions about a student’s abilities or prior knowledge.

APST 2 – Know the content and how to teach it

During my second placement in my 3rd year at university, I had the opportunity to design and teach a fully integrated science unit in a grade 3/4 classroom. The unit was designed using the 5e model and was organised in such a way that each lesson built upon the students’ learning from the previous lesson. This allowed students to reach a deep level of understanding over the 3-week period. Additionally, the unit encouraged students to engage in many hands-on activities, which also helped to enhance their learning outcomes. To design this unit, it was important that I had a thorough understanding of the content being covered, as well as an understanding of how to organise lessons in order to ensure students had worthwhile learning experiences. This unit demonstrates a thorough understanding of the content to be taught, a clear plan for teaching and assessing the content and clear links to the Curriculum, which demonstrates that I am able to meet this standard.

APST 3 – Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning

Throughout my various placements I have had the opportunity to plan and teach full units, as well as stand-alone lessons. For evidence of these, please scroll to the top of this page, or view my mentor reports.

APST 4 – Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments

Building relationships with students and creating a safe and supportive learning environment is one of the main reasons I wanted to become a teacher. I highly value the opportunity to get to know a group of young people and incorporate their interests and passions into the learning environment. This is something I consistently received positive feedback about during my teaching placements. To read all of my placement reports for evidence of this standard, please click here. I continue to seek out new and engaging ways to get to know students quickly. I feel that one of the fastest and best ways to show students they belong and are safe and supported is to take a genuine interest in them.

APST 5 – Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning

I have had experience with a range of formal and informal assessments including those I have designed myself and more structured assessments, such as the Marie Clay Observation Survey.

APST 6 – Engage in professional learning

Professional learning is a passion of mine. I have a great desire to be an excellent teacher who consistently seeks out new and innovative teaching ideas. I therefore engage regularly in formal and informal professional development and networking with teachers and school communities.

APST 7 – Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community
